The delightful and quiet main street bordering the
seafront in the unique fishing village of Bophut is
lined on either side with what were once Chinese
shophouses. The village’s shops and restaurants have been
incorporated into the original Chinese architectural structure,
lending this special community a real sense of
individual character. One of Koh Samui's oldest
settlements, and positioned on the peaceful north coast,
this tranquil fishing village was first discovered by
backpackers and although it now houses a number of
modern hotels, it nevertheless remains relatively
unchanged by Samui's tourism trade. The sleepy village
atmosphere provides a sedate alternative to the hustle and
bustle of Chaweng and the stylish bars and boutique
restaurants combine with Bophut’s unhurried ambiance to
create a truly relaxed atmosphere.
The village has a variety of shops and services, including
a supermarket, a pharmacy, a currency exchange booth and several
souvenir shops. There is a good range of fashionable restaurants,
most with fine views of the bay and Koh Phangan from their terraces.
There are Thai, Spanish, Italian, and seafood restaurants here and
between them Bophut’s eateries cater for all tastes. At night,
the area’s quiet ambience benefits from the absence of discos
and clubs, which can still be found via the special ‘night-owl’
cab running to Chaweng.
A short step from the village and you are on Bophut
beach itself, which stretches for about two kilometres, its clean
white sands fringed by coconut palms that lean towards the calm
sea. The Hat Rin ferry runs from piers in Bophut to the tranquil
island of Koh Phangan about 50 minutes away.

Happy Elephant
Located in the centre of delightful Bophut, the Happy Elephant reflects
the relaxed ambience of the fishing village in which it is a notable
landmark. Serving predominantly Thai food, the fresh seafood, selected
by guests as they enter, can be grilled or barbecued. There is an
attractive terrace with a sea view and, unusually for Samui,
the Happy Elephant offers a good range of wines and a small wine
shop.
Villa Bianca
With a romantic terrace to make the most of its seafront
location, the Villa Bianca in Bophut evokes a bright, Mediterranean
atmosphere with its European style d.cor and rattan furniture. Enthusiastically
run by its Italian proprietor, Guido, this comfortable and friendly
restaurant’s menu contains traditional Italian fare flavoured by
local seafood. A good wine list is available.
