Koh Samui is an idyllic paradise where the serene
waters of the Gulf of Thailand gently lap at the
pristine white sands of tranquil coral beaches. The island
is part of a romantic archipelago that includes nearby Koh
Phangan and Koh Tao and the exquisite Angthong national
marine park. First discovered by backpackers in the early
Seventies, the island’s long stretches of palm-fringed
beaches have attracted the controlled development of
resorts and hotels, without damage to the island’s charm.
Newcomers will be astounded by the sheer
beauty of the island. Many of the luxurious
resorts are designed to take advantage of
fantastic panoramas of leafy hillsides and
coconut-lined beaches. At many hotels, the views
can be enjoyed while sipping a cocktail, perhaps at
the side of an ‘infinity’ pool, with uninterrupted
views to the horizon. The different regions within
Samui vary widely, from the attractive and
fashionable fishing village of Bophut in the
north, to the hustle and bustle of the more
developed east coast locations. Of these, Chaweng,
with its shops, bars and clubs, is the most popular,
followed by Lamai. Away from the main tourist
areas, the island is peaceful – even sleepy – and
ideal for those who prefer not to share an exotic
holiday with the crowds.
Inland from the beaches, the leafy interior of the island
offers a wealth of optional activities. There are spectacular
waterfalls, coconut plantations where trained monkeys
harvest the nuts, views from the island’s lofty heights, and
an opportunity to trek on the back of an elephant.
